Hampshire vineyard begins one of its earliest harvests

A vineyard is on track for one of its earliest harvests on record.

Hattingley Valley Wines, based near Alresford, began picking grapes this week in a season that could break records. The early start follows a warm summer, with many vineyards across the county harvesting up to two weeks ahead of schedule. Simon Robinson, owner and chair of Hattingley Valley, said: “We’re preparing for a truly historic season.”

The 25-acre vineyard is currently harvesting Pinot Meunier grapes, with the aim of producing 500 tonnes of juice for around 420,000 bottles. Hattingley Valley is known for its English sparkling wines, which take between 18 months and seven years to mature. Rob MacCulloch MW, head winemaker, said: “Pinot Meunier is bouncing back strongly, and along with Pinot Noir, we expect deeper colours and riper flavours.

“2025 could be a standout year for Rosé.”

Traditionally, the Hampshire grape harvest starts in the final week of September, but this year’s early picking highlights the impact of changing climate conditions. Producers across Hampshire are hopeful that 2025 will produce wines of concentration, freshness, and finesse.
